Mary Brady Hawes

Mary was born in Fall River, Massachusetts on April 14, 1929, to John Edward Brady and Mary O’Neil

Brady. Her loving husband Thomas Bassett Hawes of 30 years predeceased her.

Mary graduated from Trinity College in Washington, DC. She resided in Westport,

Massachusetts and Darien, Connecticut where she was a successful realtor. She and Tom

retired to Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina in 1988 where they enjoyed building a home and

living on the intracoastal waterway with family visiting frequently. After Tom passed, Mary

moved to Plantation Village in Wilmington, North Carolina to be close to her daughter Sarah.

She has enjoyed Sunday night dinners with Sarah, Ryan and family and going to her grandsons’

sporting events.

With the salt air in her hair, Mary loved a boat ride, collecting seashells, enjoying a refreshing

swim, and walking the shores along the New England and Carolina coasts. She was an avid

golfer until well into her eighties, and she loved to connect with her many friends over a

game of bridge. In the evenings, with a scotch in hand, she would play scrabble with family or

watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She often knew the answers well before the

contestants.

Her love of travel started at a young age and continued as she explored the world with

husband Tom and her family. Later in life, at the age of 90, her sense of adventure and love

for the outdoors was highlighted by a trip to Africa where she became affectionately known as

“Queen Marula” to the people and animals around her as she showed courage, compassion

and delight for the experience. Family will remember her forever for her grace, wit,

competitive spirit and love of the ocean and seaside.

She is survived by her legacy, her three daughters: Linda Hawes (Rick Toomey), Susan Nichols

(James), and Sarah Schumacher (Ryan). She was the proud and loving grandmother of nine

grandchildren: Katie Bynum (Dave Aznavorian), Emily Bartholomew (David), Julie Fraser

(Jimmy), Adam Neunuebel (Anuta), Rebecca Bradbury (Beau), Caleb Herndon, Brady

Schumacher, Logan Schumacher, and Liam Schumacher.

She also delighted in the company of four great-grandchildren: Ariana and Andres Neunuebel,

William Bartholomew and Scotlin Bradbury.

The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the staff at Plantation Village where Mary

enjoyed the company of friends and family for the past 16 years. Many thanks also to LifeCare

Hospice who cared for her during her final days. Memorials or donations in her memory may

be made to the charity of your choice or The Nature Conservancy in support of the wildlife

and nature which she loved so dearly.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
