Maria Movasseghi

Maria was born in Portugal to Jose Alves Pereira and Maria Da Conceicao Gil Duarte. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband of 47 years, Shahram “Shawn” Movasseghi, her son Jason Shahdad Alves Movasseghi, and her daughter Vanessa Elisabete Alves Movasseghi.

When she was a child, Maria moved to Canada with her parents. However, her passion for arts and fashion design led her to pursue a college degree in England. Maria and her husband Shahram were college sweethearts, meeting in Derby in 1973. Married in England in 1976, Maria graduated in 1977 with a B.A. in Fashion Design before they moved to Iran in 1978. They moved to Toronto, Canada in 1980 where they had their two children, Jason and Vanessa, and managed a textile business. In 1996 the family moved to Wilmington, NC to help manage a family business started by Maria’s father, Jose.

Maria selflessly put the needs of everyone else before hers. No one ever left her home hungry, and she always offered a hand for support. Maria was a best friend and confidant to many, as she always had an open ear and would ease the mind of everyone around her. She carried herself with grace while caring for her family and anyone else who came into her life.

Maria avidly supported St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, donating to the cause for two decades. Her love, compassion, generosity, and kindness warmed the hearts of everyone she encountered and will be sorely missed by all.
