Lawrence Homer Henderson, 94, of Burgaw passed away on April 5, 2016 at Huntington Health Care. He was born on October 25, 1921 on the banks of the Neuse River in Bridgeton, NC in Craven County to Raymond and Ethel Batts Henderson and grew up in Vanceboro, NC and Hampstead, NC.
He stated many times that the happiest day of his life was on November 8, 1939 when he joined the US Navy. In March, 1940 the whole Pacific Fleet was ordered to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and until 1941, the whole fleet were practicing War Games. The rest is history and he was ordered to “abandon ship “when the USS California was going down. His service and stories of his Navy career were numerous in his twenty-six years in the Navy.
Homer was a true patriot and loved his family and friends very much.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lucille Futch and six of his siblings.
He is survived by a daughter Virginia Gray, a sister Ocalla Harper of Hampstead NC, and brother Jerry Henderson of Vernal, UT as well as many nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held Saturday April 9 at 12 Noon with visitation at 11:00am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter –day Saints 102 Deerfield Drive Hampstead, NC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery on Highway 210.
