Kate was born on January 26, 1934 in Wilmington, North Carolina, the daughter of Duncan and Ethel Lee Stewart. She was raised on Carolina Beach, North Carolina.
Kate is survived by her five children, Mike Trevino (Michele); Mark Trevino (Christina), Miriam Maltinsky, Marisa Trevino (Thomas Tran), and Matthew Trevino (Jenny). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jacob, David and Sara Maltinsky; Miranda (Trevino) and Jared Camacho; Michael Trevino; Tony and Adrian Trevino; and Trever and Dylan Trevino. She is survived by sister Frances “Frankie” Jones and brother-in-law Jimmy Jones; and, her many dear nephews and nieces including Scott Jones, Danny Jones, Phillip Hayes, Kathie Hayes-Moran; as well as many Trevino nephews and nieces who fondly called her Tia Kate.
Preceded in her death are parents, Duncan and Ethel Lee Stewart; brother Milton Stewart; sisters and brother-in-law’s Sara (Stewart) Paige and Richard Paige; Ann (Stewart) and Phillip Hayes; and nephews Richard William “Billy” Paige and Stewart Jones.
Kate was a civil servant devoting much of her professional career to our legal system. She was a court reporter and a dispatcher for the Corpus Christi Police Department. She was the executive assistant to the United States Federal Magistrate Eduardo de Ases. Kate retired from United States Federal Court system in 2003.
Fondly called Granny by her family, Kate was a devoted mother, grandmother and a fierce Scrabble and crossword player—a passion that is shared by her children, grandchildren and the Stewart family. She took every opportunity to return to her beloved home state of North Carolina and enjoyed attending the State’s annual Azalea Festival with family and friends.
She was an avid fan of jazz and served as an active board member, and President, of the Texas Jazz Festival where she successfully helped to plan and organize the annual jazz festival in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends; but, will be remembered by all for her spicy attitude and fun-loving spirit.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11am (eastern time) on Saturday, January 30, 2020 at Coble Funeral & Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1155 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, NC. Burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington, North Carolina. Flowers can be ordered from Sweet Nectar’s Florist 910-371-2224.
