Judy was born on February 2, 1944, in Cumberland County, NC, the daughter of Sana Swain and Arthur Lester Powell.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where she was elected a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. Judy taught English at Parkton High School in the 1980s. She was the Beta Club sponsor, started a journalism program, and was named Teacher of the Year for the 1984-1985 school year. She later received a Master of Library Science and Information Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and accepted a librarian position at Durant Road Middle School in Raleigh, NC where she worked until her retirement.
Judy loved traveling and socializing, enjoyed playing card games with friends, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Carolina Beach, NC.
She is survived by her husband Archie Bright, sister Margaret Tyre, sister Elsie Borunda, daughter Jamie Friend, son Steven Smith and his wife Tracey Smith, son Jason Bright and his wife Alice Bright, grandsons Brandon Smith and Zachary Friend, great grandson Mason Stanford, and several nieces and nephews. Judy was preceded in death by her granddaughter Christina Stanford.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Building Fund. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Staff for their wonderful care.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Coble Ward-Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, 3915 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC and a viewing will be held on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 10:00 am at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 300 Harper Ave, Carolina Beach, NC followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date, 1311 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, NC.
