Mr. Barrows was born on July 15, 1917 in Berkeley, California to Albert Lloyd and Vinnie Giffen Barrows. He was raised in Washington, D.C., where he attended public schools and George Washington University. He graduated from Cornell University and went to work for the DuPont Company in 1941. He served with the U.S. Army, 29th Infantry Division from 1942 to 1945, and participated in the D-Day invasion of Europe. In 1945 he married Myra Hall of Newark, Del., and they raised four children, the following three of whom are surviving: Frank C. Barrows of Charlotte, N.C., John Michael Barrows of Lake Anna, Va., and Lyn Barrows Boone of Granville, Ohio. A third son, Kevin Duane Barrows, died in 1981. He is also survived by granddaughter Margaret Newsom Barrows, and by members of the Peterson family, including Matthew Peterson, Nancy Peterson, and Patty Peterson Huff.
Mr. Barrows’ entire career was spent with DuPont as a mechanical engineer in the manufacture of nylon at Seaford, Del., Wilmington, Del., and Martinsville, Va. He retired in 1976. After retirement he and Myra moved to Wilmington, N.C., where Myra died in 1994. In 1995 he married Mildred Harlan Peterson of Wilmington, who died in 2006. He was a member of the Windermere Presbyterian Church in Wilmington.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the Windermere Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, N.C.
