Jim was a graduate of Manhattan College and went on to become a vice president of engineering with STV, Inc. in New York City. He also spent time as the Superintendent of Highways in his hometown of Yorktown Heights, NY. Jim and his wife Elaine retired to Hampstead in 1995 and immediately began to set down roots through volunteer work. Jim tutored math at Topsail South Elementary School, and tutored algebra, geometry, and physics at Topsail High School. He also volunteered with “Road to Recovery” driving patients to and from chemotherapy and radiation treatments. In addition, for a period he served as a Guardian ad Litem for children in New Hanover and Pender Counties and has long done weekly food runs for migrant workers between Wilmington and St. Joseph’s Church in Burgaw. In 2006, Jim received the 2006 North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service for his work with the Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Elaine, son Michael, daughter-in-law Kimberly, and grandsons Tighe (17), Patrick (15) and Nate (11). To all the special people in Jim’s life, may you always remember the memories you shared.
