Edward “Grainger” Thompson, 73, passed away peacefully at his home, Monday, November 30, 2009. Grainger was the son of the late James and Gracie Thompson, and is also preceded by his son, Edward G. Thompson, Jr., and a brother; Jasper Randolph Thompson. He is survived by his loving wife; Myrtle Marie Porter Thompson, daughters; Addie Alberta Bailey, Marcie McCoy Coleman, 2 brothers; James Morris Thompson, Neil J. Thompson, and sister; Gloria Adline Horrell, 2 grandchildren; Jonathan Michael Bailey, Cami Morgan, and 3 great grandchildren; Sebastian Neal Towles, Edana McCoy Coleman, and Timothy L. Coleman.Grainger spent 25 years with the New Hanover County school bus garage, and was a member of the Middle Sound Advent Christian Church and Woodman of the World. He was an avid fisherman, and loved to garden. Wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Grainger will be greatly missed and always lovingly remembered.The family would like to say a special thanks to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, friends and family, for their loving care and concern for Mr. Thompson. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:30pm, Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Coble Ward-Smith, Oleander Chapel. A graveside service will be held 11:00am, Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Prospect Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers will be; Jonathan Bailey, Tim Coleman, Avery Bates, David Roughten, Tommy Croom, and Jim Roy Blake. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be; Billy Farmer, Milton Horrell, Ronald Cockfield, Joe Johnson, Cecil Johnson, Tom Broadfoot, Jay Excell, and Linwood Thorpe. Rev. W.A. Horrell and Rev. Stephen Spearing will be officiating the service.
