He was born June 3rd, 1952, and raised in North Apollo, PA by his loving parents, the late Dale L. Scott and the late Maxine Sloan Scott.
Dennis graduated from Apollo-Ridge High School in 1971 and went on to attend heavy equipment school. He enlisted in the US Navy Seabees in 1971 where he served his country for four years of active duty and two years of reserve duty. During his active-duty service, he was stationed on the island Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean where his company, the Mobile Construction Battalion #62, participated in construction of naval facilities, including an 8000-foot runway with adjoining taxiway and apron. One of his favorite memories occurred on 25 December 1972 when the first C-141J transport landed on the newly completed runway with the Bob Hope Christmas Troupe.
Following his discharge from the Navy Seabees, Dennis packed his belongings into his Volkswagen bus and moved to Carolina Beach, NC, a beach community that was home to many summer memories while growing up and the retirement home of his parents. He attended Cape Fear Technical College, worked various jobs, became an active member of the Pleasure Island American Legion Post 129 and the Pleasure Island Parrot Head Club. He also began to meet a network of forever friends that would remain loyal for a lifetime.
Dennis spent most of his career as a carpenter working for Tom Sayre Construction and spent his free time fishing, surfing, and enjoying the benefits a beach community has to offer, as well as following NASCAR and his favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dennis was an artisan woodworker who framed completed puzzles and created colorful birdhouses that welcomed a variety of birds to his property. He also created and sold wooden hanging birds and uniquely designed bowls.
Dennis will be missed by his sisters, Darene ( Jim) Stankus, and Nedra ( Paul) Farcus, his three nieces, Heather ( Kevin) Porter, Stephanie Sturgis, and Anna ( Tommy) Crowl, and his seven great nieces and nephew, Gracie, Joshua, Caroline, Victoria, Libby, Jane, and Stella, as well as many cousins.
Friends and family experienced and understood how deep Dennis loved to be a servant to others through his commitment during the past thirty years of caregiving provided to his beloved mother; his devotion and attentiveness shared with his loving neighbor family, Paul, Megan, Hannah, Sarah, and Bethany; and the loyalty he embraced with his lifelong friends and their families, Wayne and Sheila, Tommy and Cindy, Sam and Melanie, Richard and Pat, Mark and Luanne, Lynne and David, and Wanda. Thank you all for your love and support for Dennis over these many years.
Dennis enjoyed a good laugh, a good party, a good day fishing with his rod and reel, and a good day creating something with his hands and inquisitive problem-solving mind. Although he endured daily physical discomfort, Dennis never wavered from sharing a smile, providing time to lend a helping hand to family and friends, and actively living each day. For Dennis, life was living to the fullest with a servant heart. His friend, the late Hugo Duarte captured the spirit of Dennis in a song titled “That’s Just Dennis” (https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=HobWOqXAjpU)
“He’s a clown, an enigma,
He’s a puzzle that we’ll never solve.
He is deep, don’t let him kid you,
Love is the force that makes his world revolve”.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you remember Dennis as you give to your favorite charity over this holiday season.
