Carolyn Yates Roop

Carolyn Yates Roop, 87, of Wilmington NC passed away at Davis Nursing Home Monday January 14, 2013, her four children at her side. Carolyn was born December 16, 1925 in Charlotte, NC to the late Nona McQuay and Wayland H Stone. She is predeceased by husbands Wallace Neil Yates and John S. Roop, her sister Virginia Foglia and brother Wayland H. Stone, Jr.

Children Stephen Neil Yates and wife Suellen, Deborah Yates Winterbauer and husband Charley and Sheppard Boyd Yates reside in Wilmington, NC. Daughter Kathryn Yates Hovermale and husband Bruce reside in Sunset Beach, NC. Step-daughters, Eleanor Roop Miller and husband Jay and Brenda Roop Mason reside in Wilmington, NC. Sister-in-law Janice Beck lives in Charlotte, NC. Carolyn’s extended family includes a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She received a BA in English from Women's College/UNCG and a Masters in Library Science from ECU. She had a deep appreciation for friends, family, education and the beauty of the universe. She enjoyed travel, tennis, sailing, birding, astronomy, swimming, beach combing and live theatre, considering each moment precious.

Services will be held at 11AM, Friday, January 18th in the First Presbyterian Church at 3rd & Orange St. Wilmington, NC. There will be a reception following the service in Gilmour Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Cape Fear Audubon, Cornelia Nixon Davis, Inc. or a charity of one’s choice.
