He graduated from RS Central High School and received a BS degree in Education and Human Services From Western Carolina University with an advanced degree in Speech Pathology. He retired after 25 years of service with the N.C. Dept. of Human Resources where he established a school for adolescence at Broughton Hospital, Morganton, N.C.
He worked with the N.C. legislation to fulfill the Willie M and Thomas S Services to those otherwise who would not qualify for mental health services. While serving as Director of the Adolescent Treatment Team, he established the first Audiology and Speech Pathology services at Broughton Hospital setting precedent for that which was adopted across the state.
He was a professor at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C. He was currently Vice President and COO of Southcare of NC, Inc., the first integrated health care company which consisted of doctor offices providing general health in eastern N.C. and mental health in 26 counties.
He was serving on the Board of Directors of Miller Mott College. He had been a church pianist and Eagle Scout. Those who knew him appreciated his wit, personality and kindness to others. His favorite quote was “Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” Unknown
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Reid Harill and his mother, Willie Mitchem Harill, and infant brother.
He is survived by his brother, Laney Bruce Harrill of Wilmington, N.C. and a niece, Lauren Reid Harrill also of Wilmington, N.C.
A visitation will be at Crowe’s Mortuary, Rutherfordton, N.C. from 5-7:00, Saturday, March 5, 2016. A funeral service will be at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church at 2:00p.m., March 6, 2016.
Interment will follow at family plot at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church.
