Arlene grew up in Brookline, MA and later moved to Connecticut where she met her beloved husband, David on a blind date. Their love affair lasted for 56 years.
While her children were in elementary school, Arlene volunteered in their school libraries. Upon moving to Wilmington in 1986, she worked in the New Hanover County Public Library system and worked there for 17 years. During that time, she was known as the “Bookmobile Lady,” and her patrons appreciated the joy and author recommendations she shared.
Arlene was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was generous, supportive, and kind and always found time to give back to the community she loved. She volunteered at B’nai Israel Synagogue and at New Hanover Memorial Hospital. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion, sending confetti-filled cards or cookies to the celebrants.
She is survived by her husband, David Burns, her son, Adam Burns (Jackie Raskin-Burns), her daughter, Drew Burns (Paul Dogge) and her 4 granddaughters: Halle and Lexie Burns and Lainey and Kylie Schmitter.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at 11:00am at B’nai Israel Synagogue, 2601 Chestnut Street, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to B’nai Israel Synagogue in Arlene’s memory.
