Miriam Dunn Lyon, born October 10, 1936 in Washington, D.C. passed away February 22nd, 2024 in Wilmette, IL. She was the beloved wife for 68 years of Elliott Lyon, loving mother of Michael Lyon (Kusavadee) and Julie Cheifetz (Daniel), grandmother of Sophie Morrison, Gabriel Morrison, and Joshua Lyon, sister of Eleanor Totz (Jon), daughter of the late Milton Dunn and Libby Dunn Hertzmark, and stepdaughter of the late Elliott Hertzmark.
Miriam attended Goucher College, and after marrying, she transferred to Boston University where she earned a BA in Art History. Art was always present, as a docent for 31 years at The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, and as an artist of beautiful textiles, jewelry, knitting, cuisine and tablescapes, Miriam brought loveliness to everything she touched.
She was the President of the National Council of Jewish Women, taught at the Molloy School for special needs children, and worked with and formed lifelong relationships with refugee and immigrant families from Eastern Europe, Vietnam and Laos. Miriam was a compassionate woman who noticed those in need of help, those who were unseen, and reached out with a quiet hand that did not ask for recognition.
For all her serious endeavors, she was also known for her fabulous, sometimes suggestive joke telling. Together with her husband, she traveled the world with curiosity and love of learning, and they traveled life together hand-in-hand.
