On February 7, we said goodbye to a beautiful soul. Mel was a righteous, caring man with a big, welcoming heart who passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease, surrounded by his loving family. Lee (nee Shlensky) shared a full and rewarding life with him for 61 years as his wife and best friend, and together they raised three adoring children: Alan (Lori Greenberg), Janet (Bill Kohn) and Kathy (Michael Teich). The only child of Hungarian immigrants, Vera and Ludwig Blum, Mel grew up in Blue Island, Illinois, went on to graduate from the University of Michigan, and earned a law degree from Northwestern University. He touched countless lives through his dedication to his clients, to his community as a member and President of Young Men's Jewish Council, and to his many friends and colleagues whom he treasured. Mel was devoted to Judaism and committed to Jewish causes. He loved music, art, tennis, horseback riding, travel, chocolate and tchotchkes, but he was most passionate about being Papa to his precious grandchildren: Joshua, Elly, Julian, Ari, Ethan, Talia, Shira and Coby. He delighted in every aspect of their lives, all the laughter, the tears, every quiet moment and joyous celebration. He was their hero and forever guiding light to all of us. We are grateful to his extraordinary team of dedicated caregivers: Andrei, Jackie, Clarence, Joe, Elinda, Margaret and Robert.
