She was deeply involved in community affairs in Wilmette, Illinois, especially through her volunteer work with the League of Women Voters, in which she served as an officer for several years, and her support of Mallinckrodt College. She loved to travel, and made multiple trips to Europe and the Middle East as well as an epic journey to China shortly after Westerners were first permitted to visit. She is survived by her sons, Carl (Kim) of Tuscaloosa and Dean (Susan Paley) of Alexandria VA, and four grandchildren: Grant, Katie-Claire, Rose, and Zeke. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Norman, in 1993. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Norman and Jeanne Pinkert Endowment for the Advancement of Geriatric Education and Research at the University of Alabama.
