Hui-Hua Wen was born on March 2, 1965, in Taichung, Taiwan, the eldest of 4 children born to Mr. Yi-Ju Wen and Mrs. Mei-Ling Cheng. She graduated with a B.S. degree in Physics from National Chung Yuan Christian University in 1988. She then worked at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) for two years. In 1990, she traveled to the United States to study, and in 1992 married Chien-Min Kao, whom she had first met at ITRI. Upon graduating in 2002 from Northwestern University with a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, she was a post-doctoral fellow in Medical Physics at the University of Chicago Department of Radiology. Despite her academic accomplishments, her biggest achievement was the birth of her daughter Patrice in 2004. Upon completion of her post-doctoral fellowship, Hui-Hua decided to devote all of her time to being at home with Patrice.
Besides becoming a mother, the other most significant transformation to Hui-Hua’s life came from becoming a follower of Jesus Christ shortly after arriving in the United States. From that day on, she was a faithful servant for Jesus and leading people to know God gave her great joy. She led her husband, youngest brother, daughter, and many others to Christ. She had a big heart for kids and took every opportunity to serve in the children’s ministry at church and at Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). Her passion for teaching God’s Word led her to become a Teaching Leader at a local BSF class. She loved to study God’s Word daily in preparation for the many lectures she gave as well as shepherding and training BSF leaders.
Hui-Hua had room in her heart for everyone. She was known by all for her uncontainable smile and always welcomed people to her home with open arms. With genuine sincerity, she encouraged friends when they were struggling, cried with them when they were down, and celebrated their milestones and achievements.
In October 2018, Hui-Hua was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). In February 2019, she underwent stem cell transplantation in hopes of a cure. Even though the subsequent months were marred with many complications, she remained the shining light of her family and friends throughout her illness. She often was the one comforting her family while she endured the pain of complex treatment. Never bitter, she faced death with enormous courage. On December 1, 2019, she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her husband, daughter, and some dearest friends.
Hui-Hua was a deeply loving person who was committed to her family, Jesus, and the faith community. She lived a significant and meaningful life that impacted many people near and far. Though the loss of Hui-Hua is difficult to bear, we can all take comfort in knowing that she is now resting in peace in the presence of her Lord Jesus and that one day, the family will reunite in heaven for eternity.
