Howard Lane Sorkin passed away on January 13th, 2022 surrounded by his family at his home in Skokie, Illinois after a courageous five year battle against cancer. Howard was born on August 17, 1948 in Chicago to Alice and Meyer Sorkin. Howard is survived by the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Sandi and their three children, Jeremy (Shelley), Elliot (Lauren), and Abby Bruggeman (Jay). He will always be remembered as the grandfather to get on the floor and play with his grandkids Samantha, Sophie, Jeffrey, Brandon, Jordan, Drew, Jack, Molly, and Brady of blessed memory. Howard was most proud of his family and truly owned the role of Patriarch. He is also survived by his siblings, twin Jay (Carol), Marlene (late Sheldon), Robert (late Lynn), Debbie (Jerry Clement), brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gary and Marsha Feldman and numerous nieces and nephews.
Howard met Sandi in 1967 at a mixer at Northern Illinois University. From the moment he set eyes on her, he knew they were to be together. They married in 1970 and by the mid 70s Howard began trading at the Chicago Board of Trade. He swallowed up the energy from the pits and was well respected by all those on the floor. Trading was genuinely in his blood as both he and his brothers followed the legacy left by their grandfather some 50 years earlier.
After years of trading Howard pivoted to financial planning earning his CFP. Always the teacher, Howard eventually began teaching CFP classes for Northwestern and DePaul. He found great joy as an instructor and his students earned their certifications with great success.
Howard’s love for teaching was matched by his passion for learning. He placed tremendous value on being Jewish and had a strong connection with Israel. He attended classes with many rabbis and always found the right quote from the texts for every occasion. He listened well and added great wisdom to discussions. Howard was active at North Shore Congregation Israel and found comfort there as a second home.
