Howard Burton Silverman died on September 10th, 2020. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynda. He is survived by daughters Julie (Kenneth) Artrip and Jill (Kyle) Edwards; step-daughter Mimi (Dr. John) Pezzuto; grandchildren Steven, Sophie, Marcus, Lily, John-Henry, Elisabeth, and Michael; his brother, Alan (Sally) Silverman; and his sister Susan (William) McNulty. Howard was born in Chicago on July 20, 1938 to Jack and Pearl Silverman, who preceded him.
Howard received BS and MBA degrees from Northwestern University, and he was a Certified Public Accountant. After serving in the US Army, he became a banker, ultimately becoming Chairman of the Board of Directors, President, and Chief Executive Officer of First Illinois Corporation, the parent company of the First Illinois Banks and other financial services subsidiaries. Active in charitable and civic affairs, Howard served on many boards, including St. Francis Hospital of Evanston, Dune Acres Civic Improvement Foundation, Child and Family Services, McGaw YMCA, American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Lekotek, Evanston Inventure, Evanston Chamber of Commerce, and the Evanston Historical Society. He was a member of, and served on committees of, the Economic Club of Chicago, Illinois Bankers Association, and Bank Administration Institute. He also served as a corporate director of several publicly-held corporations.
The American Jewish Committee honored Howard at a dinner, and presented him with their Civic Leadership Award.
Howard and Lynda enjoyed spending their weekends with family, friends and pets at their lake home in Dune Acres, Indiana. He designed the internet web site for the Town, and for many years served as its webmaster.
At Howard’s prior request, funeral services will be private.
