On Sunday, August 23, 2020, Fred L. Mills, Jr., loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 98. Fred was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 23, 1922. He was the second of three children to Frederick and Isabelle Mills. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Clark Mills, his younger sister, Marcia Hagen, and his older sister, Mary Louise Blower. He is survived by his three children, Frederick III, Melissa and Christopher, and two grandchildren, Kate Mills and Hannah Hironaka. Fred was raised in Oak Park and St. Charles, Illinois. He attended Culver Military Academy in Indiana and Dartmouth College. Following Pearl Harbor he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. 101st Cavalry where he led mechanized reconnaissance patrols in France and Germany. After the war Fred worked in various sales and management positions, eventually settling into a career as a stock broker from which he retired at the age of 90.
As a young man Fred was an avid horseman, and an accomplished competitive swimmer. He was a kind and gentle man who took spontaneous joy in bursting into song for no other reason than to celebrate life. He was active at Christ Church in Winnetka, Illinois regularly volunteering as an usher, and was active in local civic affairs, including stints on the Winnetka Village Caucus Council, and as a poll worker.
A lifelong Republican, his last political contribution was to The Lincoln Project.
