Dave was my boss and then my good friend.  He and I have stayed in touch over the years and I have a letter from him sent in May of this year.  Due to lots of visitors and the busy summer I put off answering it sadly.  I had begun to compose my response a couple days before hearing of his death.  I am deeply sorry for his loss and for my delay in answering his wonderful letter.  Dave was a good and decent man and I will personally miss him greatly.  My condolences to his family.

Chief Kelly was the kindest person I ever had the honor of knowing and the very definition of strength and integrity. I served under his command as an officer with the Glenview Police Dept for 25 years. He was everything you could ask for in a Police Chief. He will be missed.

Dave served on EPD with my father Robert Bennett. I went to school with Leo. We would like to express condolences from our family to yours. Bob Bennett and family.

Dave was one of the finest and most decent men I've ever known.
He led by making each of us want to live up to his high standards.  I suspect that when faced with a problem, that problem was often solved with a "What would Dave do?".

In his retirement, Dave spent seven years with the Ignatian Volunteer Corps, serving as an assistant repairman with Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.), which helps seniors remain in their homes. Two days a week for seven years, Dave spent his days helping make necessary repairs for low-income seniors on the south side of Chicago.
A gentle and soft-spoken man, Dave was much loved by his IVC community and H.O.M.E. colleagues. He truly was a man who knew the importance of "giving back" to his community. May he rest in peace.

I had the pleasure of working with and for Dave on the Evanston PD. My condolences for your loss.

When I joined the Evanston Police Department in 1963, then "Sgt Kelly", was my my first mentor (babysitter).  "WE" made my first arrest together, a car dealership owner who was open on a Sunday.
Later, when he would run throught the north end of Evanston I used to smile to see his "unusual" way he would run.
No one can think about Dave without remembering the way he cared about the officers under his command...from a sergeant to Captain in Evanston.
His smile was always there for everyone he met.
May God bless him with all the blessings that he gave everyone he came in contact with.

During Chief Kelly's tenure in Glenview I was an elementary school principal.  Whether serving together on a safety planning committee or attending an event or seeking his help and intervention with an incident in the schools, I always felt awe and gratitude for the Chief's goodness and total dedication to the whole community, particularly vulnerable children.  A great leader, thinker and doer with all the truest values, may his inspired life remain a beacon to his family and the many of us who had the honor of sharing time on earth with him.

I served with Chief Kelly for many years on the Glenview Police Department.  Words seem to wilt when trying to express the true kindness and positive intentions of this good man.  He always strove to do the right thing in the right way and paved a path of good work and fine examples throughout his story line.  I am very grateful the fabric of his life shared a seam with mine.

I was Chief Kelly's secretary from 1994 to 1997, and from 1997 to 2001, I had the honor of serving as a police officer under his command.  Chief Kelly was always kind, generous, thoughtful and respectful.  The example Chief Kelly set helped make me a better person and officer.  I am so grateful to have known him.

My deepest of sympathies to the Kelly family.

Chief Kelly was a great role model, an honest man with the highest level of integrity. Chief was very committed to the Police Department, it's members, and the residents of Glenview.  We are all fortunate to know and work with him.

Dave was one of my first supervisors when I came to work in Evanston.  He was a wonderful and caring person.  I always admired him. I am grateful to have known him.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I am very sorry to learn of Dave's passing.  He was indeed a great person, from whom I learned so much that helped me as a person, as the Assistant Glenview Village Manager, and later in my career in other communities.  One of my best memories is of the occasional lunchtime run I would share with him. I was most fortunate to know and work with him.

We were all very lucky to have worked with Chief Kelly in Glenview. He was always so thoughtful and respectful. I agree with Sandie Elliott that we are all better people for having known the Chief. My prayers are with the Kelly family.

Although it saddens me about the passing of Chief Kelly, I know that he is in a better place.  The Chief was a wonderful man.  He was kind and always greeted others with a smile.  This I know for sure, I am a much better person having known Chief Kelly.  I will miss him and forever treasure the friendship he and I had.  My prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Kelly family,
Your dad was a wonderful man! My life is richer for having known him. Sympathy and prayers to you all.

"Sweet" is a word not often used to describe a career police officer, but Dave Kelly was the sweetest, kindest man I ever knew. He was our next-door neighbor for 40-plus years. After relocating to a new residence a few years ago, Dave took on the self-appointed chore of stopping by each morning to pick our newspaper off the pavement and toss it onto our porch within easy reach. When I was unable to shovel the ever-present winter snow, Dave joyously took on that task as well. He was a very special man, and I am sure a very special place is reserved for him in heaven.

What I remeber most about Dave is that he was rarely still. He was always busy mowing the grass, washing the windows, changing the screens, and on and on.  He always seemed to have a project.  I will also remember how kind and sweet of a neighbor he was for more than 40 years to our family, and in particular to my parents. He always had a ready smile and a friendly wave and a helping hand. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to the entire Kelly family.

I knew Dave since we were kids in the 1940s. Spent many times at his home, with his mother, brothers and sister. They are a wonderful, close and religious  family, as exemplified by Dave we all knew. Though we will mourn Dave her on earth, he is now welcome by those of his family in  Heaven.
