We are so saddened to hear of his passing in October.  Our son and daughter had Mr. Gilbert as their 2nd grade teacher at Middleton School from 1999-2001; Nancy was privledged to be a volunteer in his class during those years! Our kids fondly remember him-he had such a fun classroom-he is a legacy in our hearts and in our community.  His passion, talent and caring for teaching kids and his fun-loving personality and musical talents has left a lasting impact way beyond the community!  All of these fond tributes of Mr. Gilbert testify to this!  May God comfort you-may you feel His presence near to you and may He give you peace.

When we first met, Artie told me that our names were closely related. Art was short for Article and Ann is really An, he said, when you consider that the 2nd n is silent and An is an article. After that, he called me Article.  This is one of many examples of how Artie connected with people.  

Theresa, thank you for introducing Artie into our lives. He made such a HUGE impact in so many different ways and with so many different people. How BLESSED we are to have known him.

There are many words to describe someone, Arthur Gilbert's was benevolence.  He was true and compassionate about all of his students and guided them so that each child would succeed.  Art was a supreme educator and will live in our hearts forever.  I will miss him greatly.

The sun shines a little less brightly now.  We have lost a truly remarkable gentleman.  Mr. Gilbert will be loved and remembered by many of his former students and their families. He was one of my daughter's favorite teachers.  She had him in second grade ten years ago and still frequently speaks fondly of him.  It is with great sadness that I wish his family our condolences.  Artie was a kind, sweet man and a wonderful teacher.

Richard and I will remember Artie for his kindness, his sense of humor, and his musical talent.  When I told Richard Artie had passed on, he remembered Artie's parody song of "the Jewish boy who eats bacon" and that Artie had played at his Aunt Virginia's wedding.  My condolences to Theresa, Joseph, Timothy, Syril, and the Gilbert family.

We will never forget all the great experiences our oldest son had with Mr Gilbert in both 2nd & 4th grades, including carrying with him the nickname he was given by Mr Gilbert in 2nd grade to this day. My son is away at college now & is saddened by the loss of Mr Gilbert & regrets not being able to pay his respects personally. Mr Gilbert was a friend to our family then & through the years beyond.  He was always a warm friendly face to us & our younger son when we returned to Middleton. Please accept our sympathies; we'll never forget his tremendious impact on our family.

We are so sorry to learn of Mr. Gilbert's passing. As so many have said, he was a warm and caring teacher. Celia loved being in his fourth grade class and we had so hoped that Emily would be in his class too. He holds a very special place in our hearts not only for how he helped Celia when she was in fourth grade, but how he helped us in every way with her own cancer diagnosis. During the rough early times, he was always there for us and helped us through many hurdles. Our thoughts are with the family. The whole community will miss him.

So sorry for your loss. Mr. Gilbert was my daughters' 4th grade teacher and she is now in 8th grade. I requested Mr. Gilbert so she could have another male role model in her life besides her dad. Mr. Gilbert was Brittany's favorite teacher and loved when he played the guitar in class. I believe he gave my daughter the spark for music as she played the alto saxophone for 3 years and said that she wants to start playing the guitar. He also gave my daughter her first recommendation so she could become a safety patrol officer in 5th grade. This was my daughter's first job and now is a Skokie, AYSO Junior Referee in soccer and a babysitter certified in First Aid, adult and child CPR from the American Red Cross. I was hoping Mr. Gilbert would get better and return to Middleton so my son could experience such a wonderful teacher since he is  in 4th grade now. We will be at his funeral to celebrate his wonderful life. It was an honor to have Mr. Gilbert as part of John Middleton School and the Skokie community.

Mr Gilbert was my second grade teacher nearly twelve years ago. It was an inspiration and a a joy to have him teach me. One of my regrets is not going back to Middleton and letting him know what an impact he had on my life and my education. I learned the importance of reading and writing in his class and learned so much from him. My thoughts and prayers are with the Gilbert family as they go through this tough time.

So sorry to hear of your loss.  Our son Eric was in Mr. Gilbert's second grade classroom 10 years ago.  Mr. Gilbert was a kind and beloved teacher---his students were the lucky beneficiaries of his warmth and humor. He encouraged and nurtured creativity and made learning fun. His memory will live on in the students he touched.

Artie was such a kind, loving and generous person; so much like his mother and father. I always loved seeing him and enjoyed his friendship more than I can express. He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by his friends.

My husband and I were blessed to have met Artie while we were in the Rotaract Club of Evanston with him in the 90s. I remember Artie as someone who was always smiling, singing and strumming and making others happy. Please accept our condolences.

I am deeply sorry and saddened to learn of Artie's passing.  I knew him briefly (now it seems), more than 30 years ago, term year 1977-1978, as we roomed together at the Northwestern (University) Apartments, with two others (Joe and Geoff), when we were both undergraduates there. I have thought of him fondly many times over the years, and I can conjure him fresh up now in my memory as I write this, strumming his guitar and singing Simon and Garfunkel songs, or Peter, Paul, and Mary, or the latest Fleetwood Mac (which was everywhere that year), or "Water Pic-ing" his teeth, since his dentist dad taught him well.  He struck me even then as a kind and sweet soul---an old soul full of sweetness, grace, and peace of mind, who loved life and never spoke an ill word of anyone. I am glad to learn that he never changed, and that he used his bountiful gifts to inspire school children. His spirit will live on in the best of them, for one never, ever forgets a favorite teacher, life guide. I will never forget him and will cherish my memories of him and the patience and good will that I know now that I learned, indeed, from him.  I wish all those closest to him, who loved him most, and were lucky to have known him far longer than I, the peace that passeth all understanding during these difficult days of loss.

We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I am a cousin in California who unfortunately only met Artie through family e-mails which I enjoyed. He sounds like he was an amazing guy and I wish I could have met him in person.

I remember Mr. Gilbert when my grand daughter Erin was at Middleton. Both the students and teachers admired and respected him. OUr whole family was terribly saddened when we heard Mr. Gilbert lost his fight. My daughter was in his class last year and he was, by far, the most favorite teacher. She was sad when he tool leave, but was crushed today when she learned that he had passed.

Our thoughts and prayers go to all of you at such a difficult time. Please know that there so many people, children, who will grow on and on, carrying his humor and love of music, and joy for learning with them always. His impact was great.

We will so miss "Uncle Artie".  Dancing, singing and always full of life.  I hope my kids can remember him that way forever.  Our family was blessed to have been a part of his life.

Artie will be sorely missed by all of the "southern clan". On the rare occasions that we got to see him, he was an absolute delight. Oh that my sons had a teacher like him. His enthusiasm and zest for life are a great loss and hopefully have been instilled in all of us to be carried far into the future. Our many condolences to Theresa, Timothy and Joseph. My son met Mr. Gilbert only once when he came into his 4th grade class last year to teach a science lesson.  I remember my son coming home from school that day and absolutely raving about how "awesome" Mr. Gilbert was and declaring that he absolutely had to have him for his 4th grade teacher.  If such a brief encounter with my son left such a lasting impression, I can only imagine how difficult this is for his former students and colleagues...

When I first met Artie and his parents at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Il.  the 1980's it was clear that Artie was a warm, compassionate, loving and gentle person who treated everyone with respect.  His spirit was a reflection of the daily joys that he found in life and living.  He certainly brought honor to his parents and family and I am sure he was also a great model to every student he taught.  What an honor for me to have know such a gracious, thoughtful and fun loving man.

Artie and I were very close friends in high school but drifted apart over the years. We re-connected online over the past six months and had the opportunity to share news of our respective families. I know Artie was blessed with Theresa and their children. Speaking to friends who knew Artie in adulthood I learned about the tremendous influence he had as a teacher. Recalling his good nature and caring attitude, it did not surprise me. I regret that my living in Atlanta prevents me from sharing my condolences in person. The world has lost a kind and gentle soul far too early.

Artie was a true Gilbert - he loved, he laughed, and he showed such compassion and care for people. His light will shine in the world in many ways for a long, long, time. May all who loved him know peace and gain comfort from remembering and carrying all Artie's good works into the future.

I never had a single exchange with Arthur in which he did not make me smile, if not laugh out loud.  He will always be loved at Middleton School and will be sorely missed by anyone who had the pleasure and the privilege of working with him.

Artie will always be remembered for his lighthearted kindness, sense of humor, and compassion for others.  But more than as memory, his light radiates within me, and I will carry him with me always.  His integrity, sense of justice, and doing what is right will continue to make this world a better place--through all those who loved and knew him well.
