Dr. Wayne Bialas of Amherst, NY passed away at the age of 72 on Saturday, June 4th, after battling serious illnesses for several months. He is pre-deceased by his mother, Virginia Hansen, Father, Donald Bialas, and brother, Gary Bialas. Wayne earned a BS degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Clarkson University and a PhD from Cornell University in Operations Research before joining the University at Buffalo (UB), SUNY Department of Industrial Engineering (IE) in 1976.
Wayne had a successful 30-year career as a faculty member of the University at Buffalo before suffering a stroke in 2006. During this time, he made research contributions to the areas of optimization, linear programming, decentralized decision-making and game theory. He devoted himself unselfishly to UB and to his students throughout his career. He served as IE Director of Undergraduate Studies and IE Director of Graduate Studies and was the faculty advisor to the UB chapters of Omega Rho, Tau Beta Pi, Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Operations Research Society, and the IE Graduate Student Association. Wayne was perhaps best known at UB for his exceptional instruction of EAS 305 Applied Probability and Statistics and was recognized four-times as “Professor of the Year” by UB’s Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Wayne’s generosity, good humor, and unique views on life had a profound impact on the lives of many colleagues and hundreds of students. May he rest in peace.
