He entered the Army Air Force in 1943 and served in Indochina as a radio-operator, also playing on the Air Force baseball team. Upon his return, he took advantage of the G.I. Bill to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Buffalo (UB).
Ray joined the family business Frontier Insulation Contractors, Inc. in 1954 and was named president of the company by his father, Frank C. Wopperer. He used his engineering and business expertise to grow the company into 10 different companies including locations in Rochester and Syracuse, NY. In 1975, he was voted "Man of the Year" by the National Insulation Contractors Association (NICA), and was later elected its president. He became more active in teaching and wrote and published a manual on the "Principles of Heat Transfer" during the 50-year anniversary of Frontier Insulation. Ray was a volunteer board member of “The Sisters of Social Service” for many years. Ray and Dorothy made their home in Snyder, NY, and raised six children together: Paul, Daniel, James, Mary, Steven, and Jon, of whom they were very proud. He remained athletic well into his 90s, playing golf and tennis as a member of the Country Club of Buffalo and Plantation Country Club in Venice, Florida. Raymond Wopperer recently celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends at Canterbury Woods.
