Visitation will be Wednesday, April 19th, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall of Piney Grove Baptist Church, 2925 Piney Grove Church Road, Williamston, NC 27892. Funeral Services will follow at 3:30 pm in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Tice Cemetary.
Kay was born on September 27, 1940, in Wayne County, NC.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Patricia G. Pittman; his father, Kincheon E. Pittman; mother, Elizabeth A. Pittman; and brother, Robert E. Pittman.
Kay was a devoted and beloved member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, choir member, cast member of the Easter Drama, and faithful servant of Christ. He attended North Carolina State University where he played baseball and graduated from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) of Wilson, NC, with a degree in Business. He used his degree in business to be successful with not only his career choices but also serving within his community and church. After 35 years with the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank as Senior Vice- President he retired to consult & audit independently for agriculture services such as Farm Credit and the Agricultural Credit Association in North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri. His career journey with the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank led him to live in Columbia, SC, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Clinton, MS. Finally, in 1997, Kay and Patricia moved back to his wife’s home and community in Williamston, NC. While in his “retirement” days he still continued as a consultant, he was an avid golf player who enjoyed time on the course with family and friends at the Roanoke Country Club and with the Northeast Senior Tour. He currently served as a Board of Trustee for the Martin Community College, Chairman of the Martin County Reevaluation Task Force, and a Farm Life Ruritan Member. In previous years he served as a tutor for Math Mates within the local schools, past president and board member for the Roanoke Country Club and a board member of the Tideland Mental Health and the Albermarle Mental Health Boards.
Survivors include son, Hugh Scott Pittman (Autumn – fiancé) of Huntington, West Virginia; daughter, Dana Pittman Birdwell (Jerry) of Maryville, Tennessee; sisters, Jane P. Thomas (Bruce) of Pikeville and Linda P. Bunn of Alexandria, VA; sisters–in-law, Becky G. Lilley (Elmo “Butch”) of Williamston, NC and Mary Charles Griffin, Williamston, NC. Kay’s pride and joy were his beloved grandchildren, Jacob, Rebecca, and Thomas Birdwell; and Sam and Emma Pittman, and Brooklyn Johnson.
