Servant-hearted community leader David Dewaine Hall entered into eternal glory on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at the age of 70 after a brief but courageous fight against cancer. He was surrounded by his family, whom he has well-equipped to carry on his legacy of Christ-like love. David was born on March 23, 1953, to Dewaine and Helen Jean Hall, and was a lifelong resident of Williamston, Michigan.
David’s devotion to service was evident in the career path he chose. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University in 1975, he continued on to graduate from the Mid-Michigan Police Academy. He spent two years in service to the Bath Charter Township Police Department prior to joining the Meridian Township Police Department, where he eventually held the honor of Chief of Police. David also graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1999. He delighted in serving and protecting the community, enjoying each and every day of the 42 years that led to his retirement in June of 2018.
But David’s true pride and joy was his family. He married his sweetheart, Diane, on May 13, 1978, whom he faithfully loved and served for 45 years. Together, they raised four children, Christopher (Jayme), Matthew (Stephanie), Jessica (Kyle) McMahon, and Andrew (Olivia), showing them daily what it means to know the Lord. As a man of many talents, David was a patient, lifelong learner, who spent his later years tending the garden and completing house projects with those he loved. They will greatly miss his steadfast example, thoughtful wisdom, and sarcastic sense of humor. His legacy of love and service will live on through his children and his eight grandsons, Griffin, Braden, Shiloh, Silas, Noah, Samuel, and two on the way.
David is survived by his loving wife, Diane (Thelen), 4 children, and 8 grandsons, as well as his siblings, Linda (John) Hayden, Susan (David) VanValin, MaryAnn Sharp, Vonda (Lindsay) Hager, and Jonathan (Sally). He also leaves behind siblings-in-law Larry Thelen, Coralee Thelen, Daniel (Carol) Thelen, Roger (Diane) Thelen, Wayne (Elaine) Thelen, and Sue (Dan) Bauer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dewaine and Helen Jean Hall, parents-in-law Alvin and Ella Thelen, and brothers-in-law Gregory Sharp and Ronald Thelen.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 28 from 5pm to 8pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 1730 E Grand River Ave, East Lansing, Michigan. All are invited to join the Hall family for a celebration of David’s life at New Hope Church, 2170 East Saginaw Hwy, East Lansing, Michigan on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation at www.parkinsonsmi.org.
