Senior Assisted Living in Perry, Michigan.
Bette was born September 1, 1922, in Locke Township, Ingham County, to EIIa (Taylor)
Stone and Brigham L. Stone. She graduated from Perry High School in 1940 and from Acme
Business College in Lansing, Michigan, in November 1941.
Bette was a cheerful, energetic, woman who loved her children and grandchildren,
entertaining guests, and being crafty. She took painting classes and belonged to a quilting group
in Port St. Lucie, Florida. After retirement, Rollie and Bette enjoyed RV'ing and undertook a
quest to visit all of the state capital buildings in the US. During their travels they were able to
visit fortynine of the capitals and enjoyed their tours of the buildings.
She married Rolland (Rollie) Harkness on August 18, 1945. Bette and Rollie built and
ran the Gold Star Lanes Bowling Alley in Williamston from 1947 to 1968. After they sold the
alleys, Bette worked for the Hayward Insurance Agency in Williamston. In 1971, Rollie and Bette
moved to Jensen Beach, Florida, where she lived until 2016, when she returned to Michigan.
She is survived by one son and two daughters: Steven and wife Barbara of Williamston;
Kathy and husband Roger Huie of Spruce Pine, NC; and Mariella and husband Linn Lockhart of
Cancun, Mexico. She had three wonderful grandchildren: Jeff, Beth, and Aaron; and six great-grandchildren.
At this time, no memorial or funeral is planned. The family will notify loved ones in the
future if one is planned.
