Bill served his country in WWII as a member of the U.S. Army’s 75th Infantry. His service and dedication in the combat engagements of the Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes, and Rhineland; allowed him to be awarded with the American Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and a Combat Infantry Badge.
Following his service, he was able to obtain a B.S.in economics from Columbia University in New York City, later leading to several positions at American Can Co., James River Corp., and the Northern Paper Corp.; primarily as a business executive. He was a member of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Williamsburg, and enjoyed golf, fishing, while always putting his family first.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 62 years, Mary Jane McGrath; his sons, Michael R. McGrath (Peggy) of CT, James W. McGrath (Donna) of NY, Edward J. McGrath (Sharon) of VA; his daughter, Mary Ellen Bednar (Thomas) of VT; 18 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. Bill was a loving and caring husband father and grandfather, who will be greatly missed.
A funeral Mass will be held Monday April 18 at St. Olaf Roman Catholic Church, 104 Norge Ln, Williamsburg, VA 23188, beginning at 10:00 am.
