He graduated from Newport News High School in 1955, began his career at NASA Langley in 1956, and graduated from NASA Apprentice School as an Instrument Maker in 1961. During his career at NASA he was presented numerous awards including The NASA Exceptional Service Medal, Outstanding Leadership Medal and Special Achievement Awards. He retired from NASA in 1995 as Head of the Machine Branch, Fabrication Division, and has spent many wonderful years since then residing at "QUITCHERWORRYIN" in Chickahominy Haven.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Francis P. and Frances K. Holt, brother Francis P. Holt, Jr., and sister-in-law Joyce F. Holt. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy S. Holt, son Stephen M. Holt, grandson James M. Holt, brother James D. Holt, many nieces and nephews, his golf-cart buddy Max, and a large extended family. Richard was a pillar of Chickahominy Haven where he was known as “Mr.-Fix-It” and as the "Mayor". He was relied on by many for advice and guidance with their projects and will be greatly missed by all. Richard attended Christ Community Church in Toano.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188 followed by a Memorial Service by Pastor Randy Garner. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Community Church, 9001 Richmond Road West, Toano, VA 23168 or JCC-Bruton Volunteer Rescue Squad, Toano, VA.
