On February 4, 2015, Kevin Baldwin of Williamsburg, VA died after a short and unexpected illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan and children, Meghan, Kathleen Giles, CDR, USN (Scott) and Patrick, along with his brothers, Brian and Sean.
Born in Schenectady, NY to John and Helene Baldwin, and raised in Bethesda, MD, Kevin attended St. John’s College High School. In his youth, he was an accomplished chess player and baseball pitcher. As a teenager, he worked as a bat-boy for the Washington Senators, meeting many 1950’s Major League Baseball icons in his two-year stint with the team.
During the Cold War, Kevin joined the Navy and served on two submarines: the USS Halfbeak (conventional) and the USS Sea Wolf (nuclear). The latter spent 60 successive days underwater, a record at the time. While on covert operations, they also tapped into Russian communication lines off Minsk, later chronicled in the book "Blind Man's Bluff.”
Following his service in the Navy, Kevin earned his J.D. from University of Kentucky School of Law, where he met the love of his life Susan. Subsequently, he enjoyed a successful career as an attorney in Washington D.C. that spanned over 3 decades and included arguing before the US Supreme Court and eventually becoming Assistant General Counsel for Washington Gas Company. In 2006, he retired with his wife and daughter, Meghan, in Williamsburg, VA.
His major loves in life were his family, the Navy, baseball, and, more recently in retirement, playing golf. Always driven by a deep intellectual curiosity, Kevin was an all-around history buff, expert on the Civil War in particular, and lover of spirited debate on a vast array of topics.
He will be missed by his family more than words can express.
Visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg on Friday 6-8 p.m. and funeral mass at St. Bede Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd. on Saturday at 10 a.m.
