Born in 1935, the daughter of U.S. Army Doctor, Brig. Gen. James and Muriel (Moebius) Stapleton, Sue spent her life devoted to her family, friends and sports teams. As an army brat she had lived in multiple locations throughout her childhood, from Atlanta, to Boston to San Francisco and even spent some time in the Philippines after the Second World War. While her parents were stationed at West Point, N.Y. she began dating the love of her life, Dick who was then a cadet a United States Military Academy.
Shortly after Dick earned his commission in June 1956, Sue and Dick were married at the Cadet Chapel. So began a 62-year adventure that blessed them children, friends and untold amounts of joy. Sue had a keen eye for detail that came in handy whether she was moving a household, three children, and various animals across the country, hosting a dinner party or looking over her grandchildren’s homework.
In addition to loving and supporting her family and friends, Sue also had a great devotion to her community. She took leadership positions within Army Community Services and soldier’s spouses groups to make sure that the families of soldiers were getting the things they needed. As her children got older, she went back to college and received a B.A from Troy State University. Later in life she would volunteer as tutor at the library for people learning English as a second language.
Upon retirement from the Army in 1984, Sue and Dick settled in Hampton. There they became actively involved in their church, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea.
Sue loved to golf and swim and was a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox and Washington Redskins. More than anything, Sue loved spending time with family and friends, all of whom will miss her greatly.
A funeral mass will be held for Sue on Friday, February 25 at 9:30 AM at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Ft. Monroe, Hampton, VA. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name to Catholic Relief Services, 228 W. Lexington Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21201 (www.crs.org).
