Born in Petersburg, VA to Joseph V. and Anna M. Powroznick, she was a devout Catholic and was immensely proud of her Catholic education. She graduated from St. Vincent de Paul Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk, VA. Soon after her nursing career began, she met and married her soulmate, William J. Jacoby, Jr., her “Bill,” a military physician. Together, they shared a blessed 63 years of marriage and 21 years of exciting and fulfilling military life. Joeann blossomed into the quintessential admiral’s wife whose love of entertaining and hosting festive parties was legendary. During Bill’s military career, Joeann volunteered many hours to the Navy Relief Society, which led to a volunteer executive leadership position as the most senior volunteer within the national organization. Joeann and Bill retired to Williamsburg, VA in 1984. After moving to Williamsburg, her volunteer work continued with the Williamsburg Sentara Hospital Auxiliary and 35 years’ service with the St. Bede Altar Guild, decorating the church with gorgeous flower arrangements. Flower arranging and painting were her artistic passions.
Motherhood and family life were Joeann’s priorities. Her beloved son, William J. Jacoby, III, “Skip,” (deceased), his wife Deena, her four granddaughters, Kendall, Kate, Kelly, and Kristen, as well as her devoted daughter, Teresa M. Jacoby, “Missy” were the center of her world. She would tell everyone that time spent with her granddaughters was “her greatest joy.” Her dearests, Bill preceded her in death in 2019 and Skip in 2010.
Joeann’s special circle of love included her beloved “baby” brother, Joseph V. Powroznick, Jr., his wife, Susan, their children, JV (Michelle), Meredith, and Van, her “great-niece” Kristin Bridy Baker, a multitude of extended family members, and treasured friends. After moving to Williamsburg, Joeann became an avid and competitive golfer, spending countless hours in the company of cherished friends on the golf courses in Kingsmill and Colonial Williamsburg. Joeann served several years on the board of the Kingsmill Women’s Golf Association and was President of the organization in 1992. Always a stylish lady who loved to shop, Joeann could be spotted on the golf course in her signature pink clothing with her captivating smile.
A memorial mass will be held Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 11 am at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, Virginia.
