Jean was born in Earlville, Iowa on July 3, 1929, to Dr. Ernest and Rhoda Sahs. She graduated from Earlville High School in 1947 and went onto college at the University of Iowa. Jean graduated from the University of Iowa in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics. At Iowa, Jean was a four-year member of the Scottish Highlanders in which she played the bagpipes.
Jean met her first husband, Richard (“Dick”) E. Tupper at the University of Iowa and they married in 1951 while Jean was still a student. In 1954, Jean and Dick moved to Newton, Iowa where they both worked for the Maytag Corporation. In 1961, they moved to Huntington, New York where they resided for over 30 years. Jean was an active member and deacon of the Old First Presbyterian Church in Huntington. Her hobbies included cooking, tennis, and gardening.
In 1992, Jean married Robert (“Bob”) E. Young of Greenlawn, New York. They moved to Ford’s Colony in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1996. Jean and Bob enjoyed traveling, golf, and bridge. They were also active members of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. In addition, Jean participated in the local chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (“P.E.O Sisterhood”).
In 2020, Jean moved to Williamsburg Landing where several of her friends resided. Jean was preceded in death by Bob in 2003.
Jean was a truly unselfish, kind, and caring person, who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We will all carry fond and loving memories of Jean in our hearts.
Jean is survived by her two loving children, Jeffrey K. Tupper (M. Patricia and stepdaughter Corinne) and Julie A. Tupper (Debbie); sister, Mary King; stepson, Steven R. Young (Margorie and children Alicia and Joshua); grandsons, Clark T. Cummings and Connor R. Cummings; nieces, Carol King Royce and Kathy Senese, and nephew, Bruce King.
Jean’s family thanks the nurses, aides, and rehabilitation staff of Williamsburg Landing for their genuine care and assistance.
A funeral service will be held at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, Virginia on February 9, 2024, at 11:00am. The service will also be streamed live online. The link to the streaming is www.mywpc.org/streaming.
