Janet Maria Chalke

Janet M. Chalke, 88, of Williamsburg, VA, and formerly of Scituate, MA, passed away on May 10, 2021. Her husband, Phillip W. Chalke, preceded her in death.
After attending high school at the Academy of Holy Angels, in Demarest, NJ, Janet earned her BA from Rosemont College in Rosemont, PA. She retired as a legal secretary, and was the former acting Town Manager of Cohasset, MA. During her time in Williamsburg, she was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church, and she often attended Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists.
Janet was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and a true and faithful friend. She loved spending time at the ocean and traveling. An avid reader, she belonged to several book clubs. She enjoyed dancing, arts and crafts, including knitting for hospital patients and newborns, and talking politics and current events. She was also a generous supporter of various children’s organizations, Catholic charities, and liberal causes.
She is survived by her children, Janet Spaulding (Harlan Spaulding) of Carver, MA; Susan Peterson (Heather Scully) of Williamsburg, VA; John Peterson of Kiel, Germany; Sheila Peterson of Cape Coral, FL; Neil Peterson of Wilton, CT; Elizabeth D’Urbano (Todd D’Urbano) of Ashland, MA; and Paul Peterson (Kim Peterson) of Chester, NH. Her eight grandchildren, Harlan Spaulding, Jonathan Spaulding, Norah Peterson, Drew Peterson, Wesley Peterson, Jenna Peterson, Sean Peterson, and Alexis Peterson will also miss her.
A Prayer Service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
