James David Dimmett, MD, age 94, a longtime resident of Williamsburg, VA., passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, August 4, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 29, 1929, in Belleville, Illinois and later lived in Indiana before moving his family to Virginia. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Ruth Di-Ann (Roth) Dimmett.
Dr. Dimmett graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School (Evansville, Indiana), attended Tulsa University and Evansville College (now University of Evansville), and graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine. After several years of family medical practice in Evansville and Boonville, Indiana, he completed training in child psychiatry at Georgetown University’s School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Dr. Dimmett then practiced psychiatry for over forty years in Northern Virginia and Williamsburg before joining the staff of Eastern State Hospital. In later years, he joined the staff of the Counseling Center at The College of William and Mary. He retired at the age of eighty to spend time with family and to travel with his wife.
Dr. Dimmett was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, having served during the occupation of Korea. He was a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church in Williamsburg and the Medical Society of Virginia.
Dr. Dimmett is survived by sons, Steven Dimmett (Deborah) and Gary Dimmett; daughters, Brenda Harris (Donald), Karen Raiford, Janice Hecker (Thomas), Rita Dimmett (Dana Lutz), and Rebecca Dimmett-Watts (Jeffrey); as well as eighteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of life will precede private burial at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Bon Secours Community Hospice House, 1133 Old Bon Air Rd, Richmond, VA 23235.
