Harry Henderson Jr. passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. “Jackie,” as he was affectionately known, was born November 27, 1951, to Harry Henderson Sr. and Hazel M. Lewis Henderson, both now deceased.
Jackie was the second eldest of eight children. He was a loving brother, father, and grandfather. He was also known as “Wolf” to both friends and family.
He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age, was baptized and joined New Quarter Baptist Church. His favorite Scripture was Psalm 23.
He completed first and second grades in the family’s hometown of Harrisburg, PA. He then attended York County Schools, graduating from York High School in 1969. After graduation, Jackie joined the United States Army, serving in Vietnam until 1975, at which time he was honorably discharged.
He then began working for the federal government at Cheatham Annex. He was employed there as a warehouseman for several years. In 2003, he began working at Liberty Warehouse, where he earned the title of Building Maintenance Manager. He was employed there until his retirement in February 2023. He considered his Liberty coworkers his second family.
Jackie loved playing softball and played with teams in the City of Williamsburg Parks & Rec Department. He also was a league bowler for several years.
He leaves cherished memories with his sons: Tyrone “Chucky” Vines (Ashley) and Antoine Whitby, both of Williamsburg, Va.; four grandchildren: Tyrell Vines, Endya Vines, Arianna English, and Anijah Whitby; one brother, Alphy “Butchie” Henderson (Tina); four sisters: Mary “Susie” Henderson, Nona Jenkins, Claudette “Tammy” Henderson, and Michelle Henderson Powell (William); along with several loving relatives and caring friends.
Jackie was a very giving man. He would help anyone in need as well as give anyone the shirt off his back. He was known for his love of dogs and could be seen all over Williamsburg riding his cherished dogs in his vehicles. Lola was his most recent dog and canine friend; she meant the world to him. Lola will be well taken care of by Jackie’s eldest son, Chucky.
Harry “Jackie” Henderson Jr. will be remembered as a humble man who enjoyed a peaceful life with his dogs.
A service for Harry will be held Thursday, March 30, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia 23188. Family and friends will meet at the family home at 1:00 p.m.
