While growing up, one thing that was for certain, she was always surrounded by family which helped her grow up to become the wonderful woman she was. She was well on her way to getting a degree in architecture, until she had to leave Cuba due to the revolution. In 1961, at age 19 and with just a suitcase, she began her new life.
Thankfully, she was able to be surrounded by family again, as Elena was able to stay at her aunt and Godmother, Rita Alsina's house until she was able to get on her feet again. She eventually met, in Connecticut, her soulmate, Demetrio. On August 5th, 1963 the two began their 61-year journey together. And what a journey it was.
During their 61 years of marriage, they moved some 14 times, including twice to other countries. Why so many times? No, not because they could not pay the rent or mortgage, but because Demetrio was a pilot in the US Navy. Their first child, Michelle, came in 1967, followed by Louis in 1969. Despite all of the moves, Elena made sure none of their children were left behind, either accidentally or on purpose. Everywhere the family went, Elena turned the new house into a home. Especially when Demetrio went on 2 deployments in the Vietnam War as well as 5 other deployments in support of the war, Elena worked tirelessly to make sure the children were loved and felt safe with Daddy not being there. Even as both children grew up, moved out, and eventually found their way, Elena was always there to help in any way possible. Demetrio and Elena eventually became grandparents, as Jim was born in 1986 to Michelle. Joe and Elena's final move was to Williamsburg 22 years ago.
Throughout all that time raising children and keeping the family together, she always found time to help others as well. Volunteering in various charities that dealt with infants and small children was something she was very passionate about. Of the many charities she worked with, she was especially devoted to Hope in Northern Virginia as well as being a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children.
On April 7th, 2025 Elena peacefully and quietly passed. While we are all deeply saddened by this, we only have to look at how Elena lived her life and all the selfless things Elena did for her family and for others, that we can't help but have a smile on our face as well. Her light shines bright and memories of her will live on within us forever. Until we meet again.
A visitation for Elena will be held Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia 23188, followed by a service at 2:00 PM.
