He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1944 to 1946. Donald graduated from Penn State University in 1950 where he received his B.S. degree in horticulture. He became a Professor Emeritus at State University of New York at Farmingdale. Donald taught ornamental horticulture, landscape design, was a registered landscape architect, a landscaping consultant, volunteered extensively at flower shows and with golf course superintendents, nurserymen and contractors. While living in FL, he also volunteered as Director of AARP 55 Alive.
After retirement, he enjoyed golf and overseas travel with his wife.
Donald is survived by his wife of 75 years, Grace Detwiler Griffiths; daughters, Marsha Griffiths of Salem, OR and Pamela Costanzo (Pete) of Chincoteague, VA; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
