AN EX PEOPLE EXPRESS PILOT  WHO I ENJOYED FLYING WITH
TREMENDOUSLY.  A FUN GUY, PRO UNION, AND A GOOD STICK ! 

I'LL NEVER FORGET WHEN SECOND OFFICER HUGH FROM THE CHIEF PILOTS  OFFICE (A lower level management pilot) WALKED INTO THE "READY ROOM" (wx room) AND BRUCE LOOK AT ME AND SAID, "DO YOU SMELL A SKUNK IN HERE  FRED ?" I SAID NO. THEN BRUCE SAID, "JUST LOOK AROUND" AND LAUGHED ! 

I ALSO REMEMBER HE ALWAYS  CALLED   EWR AIRPORT RAMP CONTROLLER, "RING MASTER;" ON THE RADIO TRANSMITTER.  WHEN I ASKED, "WHY DO YOU CALL THE RAMP CONTROLLER RINGMASTER ?" HE SAID, "FREDDY BECAUSE IT'S CIRCUS HERE" AND LAUGHED !

A GREAT, FUN GUY, TO FLY WITH AND I HAVE MANY GOOD FLYING   MEMORIES ! R.I.P. !

My buddy Bruce- You became my new room mate in Korea 1976. We were 23 years old. You always made sure we had a good time! Meeting up again in 1980 when we were both flying corporate. Many fun family times in the years afterwards. Will miss you greatly-Glenn

So sorry to hear the news of Bruce’s passing. I knew him, and I flew with him at People Express, Continental and United.
We had a lot of laughs, he was a true character, the kind who makes the world go round. 
I read that Bruce “flew west” in my ALPA magazine.
My wife, Judy flew with him at People Express and also sends condolences. Bruce was one of those memorable people you meet in life, she said.

My sincere condolences to the family of Bruce. He was a wonderful person and good friend whom I flew with many times with our combined airlines, starting with People Express. 
We shared many laughs together on the flight deck and on overnights as well.

I want to say my condolences to Mrs. Hunter and the family. My name is Amanda and I work for BAYADA Home healthcare in the billing department. I never met Mr. and Mrs. Hunter in person ,but over the phone we grew close in a relationship that I felt that they were family to me. Our billing is in New Jersey and being hours apart I got to know them and could tell that they are a warm loving couple. Mrs. Hunter and I would could talk on the phone for an hour for a five minute question and just laugh and talk about life. I grew to know them without even meeting them in person and I always couldn't wait to call them to hear about Bruce and his driving adventures. I feel so lucky to get to know Bruce and be a part of his care. My love and prayers to Mrs. Hunter and family.

Bruce was thrilled to meet Derek Bell, a British racing driver and former Porsche factory driver, at a Porsche Club of America event at Amelia Island this past March 2023. 

Bruce followed Derek Bell and his races throughout Europe when he was in high school in Germany. 

Bruce mentioned to Mr Bell that he saw him race at LeMans when he was in high school.  Derek laughed and said “Now that really makes me feel old!” 

As many know, after Cayte, Alex, family and friends, Bruce loved fast cars and Porsches.  

In the spring 2022, Bruce began restoring his 1981 Porsche 911 SC that he had purchased in 1982.  Restoration took almost a full year - it hadn’t been driven for almost 30 years!  Restorations were finally completed April 2023.

While waiting for the car to be completed, he purchased a 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S in which he delighted in driving.

Bruce found great delight in driving both cars, attending Porsche club functions, and sharing stories with other Porsche enthusiasts. 

Bruce took Cayte to Boston to celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary.  

When I asked him about why he chose Boston, he wrote back that they met in Boston on a two-day trip with People’s Express.  

Cayte says the date was May 28, 1982; she had just started with People’s Express two-weeks prior and was assigned to work this two-day trip to Boston.  It was when the crew went to dinner that they actually started talking and getting to know each other.

Alex’s college graduation from University of South Carolina - MBA in Finance - December 12, 2022 in Columbia, SC.  Bruce was so happy and proud! 

This picture was taken 5/18/87 - seven weeks after Bruce and Cayte’s March 28 wedding!  They came to Cleveland Hts for Jan’s college graduation.  



I’m Bruce’s sister-in-law Jo.  Bruce entered our family’s lives May 28, 1982 when he and Cayte first met while at People’s Express and started dating soon after (he would call it “People’s Distress” which always made me laugh!)  Bruce was such an excellent pilot, though at our first meeting, I wasn’t so sure I wanted my pilot flying the plane to be so funny and know so many jokes!  But once behind the controls, he put my fears to rest!

Bruce was intelligent, funny,  kind and generous.  I was also Bruce’s favorite person to tease, though I suspect there were others!  Always in good fun, he delighted in teasing me endlessly about my love of Ohio State football (calling it “Zero State”) and the superiority of SEC over BigTen Conference.  I would tell him that he once again proved jealousy looks good on no one and he’d get fired up all over again.

Our family loved him and will miss him beyond measure.  


Kate and Alex, I was sadden to hear from Wayne of Bruce’s passing.  We were so close to getting together at our flight school reunion.  I so enjoyed talking and texting with Bruce about Formula 1 (both Max Verstappen fans), Porsches (we both owned 911s), our military careers (Basic Training and Flight School) that began May 8,1972 and our aviation careers after the Army.  

I cannot believe the number of “stories” that came out of our 1 year of Basic and Flight school together…. Bruce had a knack for getting us in trouble, but he had an uncanny ability to get us out of trouble without damage.  Not sure bow he accomplished that feat.  Several times we snuck out of Ft Wolters that included, but not limited to…. Doobie Brothers concert in Arlington, TX, Dallas Nationals NHRA drag races and the 24 hours of Daytona, to mention a few. 

He was one of a kind.

I met Bruce over 25 years ago when I joined Continental Airlines. Even though Bruce was only eighteen months older than I, he served as a mentor during my early airline career. Bruce also became a good friend and we shared not only a love of flying, but German cars, sports car racing and Formula 1.
Bruce had a large following of friends and enjoyed the respect and admiration of those who had the privilege of flying with him. There were, and still are, many legendary “Bruce Hunter stories” told again and again  by his fellow crew members.
After each of us retired we would meet occasionally for breakfast or lunch, and rather than reminisce we talked about fasts cars, auto sports, and our next projects.
I will miss him a lot.

Bruce Hunter married my sister Cayte in March of 1987 and we loved having him in our family.  My husband Ron and I appreciated these great qualities about Bruce: 
•	His friendly and outgoing personality
•	How deeply he loved Cayte and Alex 
•	He provided well for his family
•	He had a great sense of humor and we enjoyed “getting him going” on his opinions of which sports teams were best.  (Even though he married an Ohio girl, he could just never see the light!)

He fought a good fight.  He is gone too soon and we will miss him!

I always considered Bruce as “My Favorite Pilot” to fly with .. he was funny , witty and fun to be around. When I attended his retirement party I remember something someone wrote… the shoes will never be the same! I agree! You will surely be missed but always remembered . 

I will always remember a party I had and he screamed from across the room.. hey Caroline block me .. I’m going to hit the head! Everyone got quiet and laughed .. because they got it too! He was a pilot at heart.
