Garland M. Newhouse Rex, (100), of Willard, died Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Willows of Willard. She was born May 13, 1913 in Attica, OH to the late John and Addie (Rader) Newhouse. She married Raymond Rex on February 10, 1932 and he preceded her in death on June 16, 2006.
Mrs. Rex was employed several years ago at the Willard City Schools, in the cafeteria. She was a volunteer at the Willard Municipal Hospital and the Willard Food Bank, and was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing.
Garland Newhouse Rex was born on a farm just west of Attica, OH on May 13, 1913. She was the third of four children born to John & Addie (Rader) Newhouse. She began school in the one room brick school building, which still stands two miles north of her birthplace. She loved school but her education was periodically interrupted when she was needed to help out at home. The family moved to Willard in 1925 where Garland entered high school. She had many interests, including playing the guitar and drawing. There was little time for these once she married and began raising a family.
Garland married Raymond Rex on February 10, 1932 in the parsonage of the UB Church on Pearl St. in Willard. Over the next seven years, four children were born, Kenneth, Barbara and twins, Janet & Jeannine. Raising a family in those days took a lot of work. Mom often fell asleep in her chair while darning socks at the end of the day. She was gentle, humble and patient, always ready to help others. In later years, living on S. Main St., mom and dad helped many friends with transportation to church and other places.
Early in their marriage, Garland and Raymond accepted Christ as their guide for life. Mom's steadfast faith never wavered. It gave her an optimism which carried her to the end. Her motto was "just be a good person and things will work out." She was a member of First United Methodist Church for 72 years.
Mrs. Rex is survived by four children: Kenneth (Patricia Wade) Rex of Fairfield, OH, Barbara (Wayne) Thomas of Crest Hill, IL, Janet Painter and George Scortia of Dayton, OH and Jeannine (Richard) Snay of Willard, 11 grandchildren and 6 step grandchildren, 23 great- grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers: Arlyn and Fred Newhouse, sister: Gladys Walter, and grandson: Kevin Thomas.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, February 14, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Willard, with the Rev. Doug Beggs officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, New Haven. Friends may call Friday 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service, at 12:00 noon.
