Mark Danforth Swett

Mark Danforth Swett, 69, physically of The Villages, Florida but genuinely from Sidney/Fairfield, Maine stepped peacefully from this world to the next, with family by his side, on August 15, 2023. He will remain in our hearts forever.

Mark was born to Alton P. and Barbara D. Swett in Corning, NY on February 28, 1954. He had a happy childhood alongside his elder brother, Allen, in Painted Post, NY but he knew from an early age that he was a “Mainer” at heart. The annual two-week family vacation there may have wet his thirst for Maine but living there quenched it. To Mark, “Maine” was always home.

He was a graduate of Corning Community College and SUNY at Oswego State University, leaving with a teaching degree in industrial technology. Mark’s teaching career spanned 36 years with all but one at Lawrence High School, Fairfield, Maine. It was there that he enjoyed his various positions: teacher, department chair, adult education instructor, class advisor, football videographer, basketball statistician, and the creator of many special touches to enrich the school community. While possessing a quiet demeanor, Mark was industrious, creative, and energetic. Multiple ideas came to fruition through his capable hands. Some people use things, they destroy. Mark was a creator, a builder. Mark always hoped that his legacy would be visible in the skills he instilled in his students. He wanted their lives to be enhanced by practical, useful skills. When you think of him remember to “Measure twice – Cut once.”

He also worked part time as a sales associate at Home Depot where customers reaped the benefit of his knowledge and common-sense approach. He is a past member of the Clinton Lions Club and served once as King-Lion. His most memorable moments included any visit with Uncle Buddy, his Allagash adventure, and his trip to the Biltmore.

In addition to his parents, Mark is predeceased by many whom he loved; Uncle Buddy, Aunts Cathy, Jean, and Eleanor; two nephews and one great niece.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam; daughter, Brooks (Steve) Bicknell; grandchildren, A1C Dante Blevins, USAF and Kaitlyn Bicknell (who lovingly called him (“Grandpee”); son, Shawn Bard (Jenn and the kids). He is further survived by his brother, Allen (Janice) Swett and nieces in NY, two cousins and their families in Maine. He always enjoyed himself while with his in-laws Ercell and Gloria Thibeault as he considered their home his; he relished any spent time with his extended family. He felt especially blessed when around Chase and Dorothy. Mark also leaves many dear friends and colleagues.

Arrangements are entrusted to Dignity Memorial, and to Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Maine Street, Fairfield, Maine 04937. Interment will be at Sunset Cemetery in North Anson, Maine. The family will receive visitors at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home on September 6, 2023, from 2:30 -4:30 pm.
