Walter H. Martz, Jr. 90, retired independent petroleum Geologist, rose to Heaven on January 12, 2018. He was born on June 19, 1927 (the greatest year, he often recalled ) in Independence, MO toWalter Sr. and Elizabeth (Dulaney) Martz. The family moved to Hutchinson, KS where he attended Hutch High School. He joined the US Navy and played baritone in the Navy band. He returned home to Hutch where he attended JUCO. It is there where he met his farm girl love, Joan May of Haven. The newlyweds moved to Golden, CO where he graduated from Colorado School of Mines. Together they lovingly nurtured 4 children. His many and varied interests included golf, playing the harmonica and guitar, and making personalized paper airplanes and gifting them to his many special friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Lucille Mitchell, wife Joan and daughter Jennifer. He is survived by sons Steve (Anita), Tim (Cathy) and David (Sue); 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Hillside Funeral Home West.
