Martinez, Sr. Guadalupe (Margaret), 95, a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph entered eternal life June 8,2024 at Mt. St. Mary’s Convent in Wichita, KS. She was the second of eight children, five girls and three boys born to Roger Martinez and Julianita Vigil Martinez on May 10,1929 in Agua Romon, Colorado. Her elementary education through high school was entirely in the local school system of Del Norte, Colorado. Upon completing high school, she entered the Congregation of St. Joseph in Wichita, KS and received into the congregation on March 20, 1950. Her first profession of vows was on July 26, 1952, followed by final profession of vows July 26, 1955.
She earned a B.S. in Education from St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, KS and an M.A. from St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO. Her first year of ministry was caring for children at St. Joseph Home for children in El Dorado, but after this temporary assignment she soon transitioned to her many years of her education ministry. She was a teacher/principal of schools in the Wichita Diocese as well as those of Oakland, California and Portland, Oregon. Sister’s last position was a lengthy one of about 16 years at Trinity Jr. and Senior High School in Hutchinson, KS. She spoke fondly of her work there and the parents and students with whom met through those years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roger, and Julianita Martinez, all her siblings, Max Martinez, Flora Martinez, Roger Martinez, Adolph Martinez, Sallie Martinez, Beatrice Mascarenas and Martha Garcia. Twenty-nine loving nieces and nephews survive her.
The Welcome Home, Monday, June 17, 3:00 p.m. followed by the Wake/ Reception at 6:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be Tuesday, June 18, 10:30 a.m., all at Mt. St. Mary’s Convent 3700 E. Lincoln, Wichita, KS. 67218. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregation of St. Joseph Retirement fund.
