Ruby Louise Flentie was born December 4, 1926 at home on a farm near Centralia, Kansas. She was second of five children born to George and Virgie (Hogle) Flentie.
After milking cows, she rode a horse to her one-room school through the eighth grade. After graduating from Centralia High School, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp, a government subsidized program to help fill WWII nursing shortages. After her training at Halstead Hospital School of Nursing, she enjoyed her years in the Labor Delivery Rooms at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
On June 12, 1949, she married Morris Flory, a modifications planner at Boeing. Life was happy and busy. She was active in PTA; was a Cub Scout Den Mother; Camp Fire leader; and volunteered for the American Cancer Society. Family was of utmost importance to Ruby; attending family reunions and doing extensive genealogical research through the years.
Ever generous and sociable, she was National President and 70-year member of Phi Beta Psi, a sorority who supports doctors in cancer research. She visited shut-ins and volunteered at Economy Corner, a church thrift shop. She was a member of the 20th Century Club and helped out at the Century II Performing Arts Center.
After Morris died in 1991, she married Larry Weixelman. Her three children and his eight children blended into a warm, supportive new clan. They had 12 happy years together until he passed away in 2005.
Larry and Ruby were trained hospice volunteers and delivered food through Meals on Wheels. They enjoyed dancing and traveling, especially going to Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho where her children, grandchildren and great-grandson live.
A force of nature, Ruby continued to travel, host bridge parties and live independently until the very end. She died peacefully at home December 20, 2022, age 96. Her sparkling blue eyes, warm smile, and heart to heart hugs will be greatly missed.
Besides Morris and Larry, she was predeceased by her siblings Warren, Merlin, Elton, and beloved sister Doris.
Surviving are son Steven (Lisa), daughters Carol (Fred) and Pam (Ethan); grandchildren Whitney (Shawn) and Nick; and great-grandson Jack.
Visitation will be January 2nd 3:00-7:00 pm at Lakeview Funeral and Cemetery, 12100 E. 13th Street, Wichita.
