Ron Nagy died Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. His death was caused by complications due to Agent Orange exposure and the later development of peritoneal mesothelioma.
Ron was born June 11, 1951 in Longview, WA. The family moved to the Detroit, MI area in 1955. He graduated from Lamphere High School, Madison Heights, MI in 1969.
He joined the U.S. Air Force in September 1969 and continued his military career until January 1991. He retired as a Master Sergeant at Travis Air Force Base, CA.
His Air Force career started as an aircraft loadmaster on the following aircraft: C141A, C-130E, and the C-5. He cross—trained to flight engineer on the C-5A and B.
During his military time, he had a total of approximately 7,600 hours of flight time, including a little more than 1,100 hours of combat flight time.
He served in the Southeast Asia area starting from 1970 based out of the CCK (Ching Chuan Kang) Air Base at Taichung City, Taiwan. The base closed in 1979 and his wing transferred to Clark Air Force Base, Philippines. He was transferred to Travis Air Force Base, CA and completed his 21 years of military service.
His military decorations include: 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 8 Air Medals, 2 Commendation Medals, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and Vietnamese Campaign Ribbon with 5 Battle Stars.
After his military service he attended and received degrees and credentials from the following schools and colleges: AA, Solano Community College, Cordelia CA; AOS, Colorado School of Trades, Lakewood, CO; B.A., Simpson University, Redding, CA; and, Teaching Credential, California multiple subject with English Learner Endorsement, California State University, Chico, CA.
In 1998 he married Christine Howard of Anderson, CA. They lived there until 2008 when they moved to Wichita, KS. During his time in Northern California, he worked as a professional gunsmith in Redding, as well as a substitute teacher in Redding and Red Bluff.
Ron is survived by his wife and best friend Christine Nagy; brother Randy (Patty), Federal Way, WA; sisters Cheri (Jim) Hasselle and Candy (Bruce) Storace; nephews Jason and Ian Nagy; and niece Caitlin Kruschwitz. He was preceded in death by his parents Stanley A. and Virginia G. Nagy and sister Coleen Nagy.
Ron was an avid waterfowl and upland bird hunter. He enjoyed the shooting sports, golf and his beloved retrievers. He was also a former SCUBA diver with P.A.D.I. Dive Master rating. He was an amateur hunting retriever trainer having trained several master hunters in the AKC hunt test program. He gave back to the sport as a well-respected AKC hunt test judge.
Ron lived a full life and will be missed.
