Born on December 29, 1940, Lawrence was an early academic achiever with an entrepreneurial thirst. His journey of love began when he met Deloy, the woman who would become his lifelong partner, at Harding College in Arkansas. Their marriage in 1960 marked the start of a remarkable 63 years.
Lawrence’s professional life was a testament to his incredible work ethic and passion for his craft. After graduating from Pittsburgh College with a Bachelor’s of Education degree, he served as Garden Plain’s Shop Teacher and assistant Principal from 1962 to 1967, then shop teacher at Heights High School from 1967 to 1973. His enthusiasm for teaching woodworking and welding influenced many young lives.
His love for creating with his hands and business mindset led him to pursue his ventures. In 1965, Lawrence built their family home which also became the site of his first woodworking shop. In 1970, he established his first business, Creative Interiors, located on Anna St. while continuing to teach for a few more years. The business continued to grow, expanding to two other locations as it thrived. Eventually the business consolidated on West Kellogg evolving into a corporation delivering aircraft components and complete private aircraft interior kits.
Lawrence’s passions weren’t limited to woodworking alone. He was an avid car enthusiast, and those who knew him well knew that he considered himself "part car." His interest in cars started in high school where he built street rods and the passion continued to grow throughout his life. His appreciation for classic cars was more than a business and hobby—it was an integral part of who he was.
Lawrence was also a man of deep faith. As a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, his Christian beliefs were central to his life, providing him with strength and guidance in all that he did. His commitment to his faith was evident in the way he lived his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Delphine and Oren Smith; brother, AC Smith; grandson, Zhenya Kyle; and great-grandson, Robby Smith.
Lawrence is survived by his beloved wife, Deloy; their children, Kimme Kyle Smith and Gaylan (Sherry) Smith; grandchildren, Justin (Jessica) Smith and Amanda (Tanner) Smith; great-grandchildren: Micah Kyle, Delphine Smith, Alice Ruth Smith, Canaan Smith and Corinth Smith; and his brother, Harvey Dale Smith.
