89, of Wichita, Kansas passed away January 21, 2017. Nancy, the youngest of nine children, was born on August 24, 1927 to Leon and Fern (Ponds) Lemmons. Nancy was born and raised in Pocahontas, Arkansas and lived there until completing high school. After graduating, she moved to work in a war plant in St. Louis, Missouri where her aunt who was the Superintendent of Schools lived. She married Vincent Newberry in February of 1946 and they moved to Kansas as newlyweds. They had three children: Vivian, Kathryn, and Mark. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, eight siblings, her husband of seventy years, and her oldest daughter, Vivian. Nancy was the mother of three children, the grandmother of eight, the great-grandmother of nine, and the great-great grandmother of one. Nancy loved babies, playing cards with friends and family, embroidering, and working part-time at Innes in downtown Wichita. She would often sing old religious hymns and even knew the lyrics by heart for years even after being diagnosed with dementia. Nancy was admitted to Westview Manor in Derby in March of 2001 where she continued to live for an amazing 16 years in spite of her condition. She was known for her ornery sense of humor and attempts to “escape.” Nancy will truly be missed by her family, her friends and the staff and residents at Westview Manor.
