60, passed away Wed. August 23, 2017 in Wichita, KS. Born to Edward C. Haines and Margaret Knostman Haines on June 3, 1957, in Mentor, KS she grew up as a farm girl with a special love of horses and her pet dogs and cats. They moved to a cattle ranch in Douglass, KS during her teen years and she graduated from Douglass HS in 1975. She attended both Kansas State University and later Wichita State University. While she worked in banking for many years in Manhattan, KS her real love was animals. She volunteered at the Sunset Zoo there and was on the executive committee of the Friends of the Sunset Zoo, before moving to Wichita to work for the Sedgwick County Zoological Society. She married Mark C. Reed on Jan 31, 1988 and begun a long association at the Sedgwick County Zoo volunteering for the zoo and was co-leader with her husband on zoo society sponsored photo safaris to various wildlife destinations in Africa, Central and South America. Additionally she had the good fortune to travel through many countries in Europe, as well as several visits to Australia and New Zealand. One of her most beloved spots that she revisited yearly for rejuvenation of her spirit was Puerto Rico. She was an accomplished western horsewoman who had many horses over the years and volunteered at the "Hope in the Valley Equine Rescue & Sanctuary". She is survived by her husband, Mark of Wichita, KS and brothers, Larry Haines of Kansas City, MO and Max Haines of Salina, KS. A memorial has been established with the Sedgwick County Zoological Society's Conservation Fund, 5555 Zoo Blvd., Wichita, KS 67212. There will be a Celebration of Mary's Life held at the Reed Family Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley exhibit at the Sedgwick County Zoo, Thursday Sept. 21st from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
