Mary Izella Ester Markel age 95 of Wichita Kansas, entered Heaven’s Gates on August 11, 2017. Mary was a devoted wife and mother, loving grandmother, protective big sister and caring aunt to all of her family. Her family included her beloved daughter, Suzan, son-in-law, Nish; grandchildren Joshua and Laurel Limaye and siblings, Vivian Sullivan, Eugene Baker, Lloyd Baker and Katherine Beckner. Mary also treasured her nieces and nephews and their families. She thought fondly and valued the relationships of many others throughout her life. Some of those that she will dearly miss include Asmeeta (Peaches) Erickson, Vasumati (Sue) Limaye, Dr. Hector Rios, Ethel Kaiser, Carolyn and Larry Rose, Melvin Viktora, Tony Strickland, Rick Harbison, Dr. Abe Tatpati, Dr. Olga Tatpati, Dr. Charles Beck and Abbey Pfeiffer. Mary also built strong friendships with the residents and those who cared for her at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion, Iowa during her last two years of life. Mary was born on June 1st, 1922 in Independence, Missouri and was the precious daughter of Henry and Gladys Mans. Mary worked early in life at Dockum drugstore in downtown Wichita and then turned her attention to being a mother and homemaker with the arrival of her daughter. She also enjoyed ceramics, garage sales, baseball - especially the Royals and Cubs, Christmas shopping, watching the 700 Club and staying up to date on current events. She was a perpetual mentor and companion demonstrating compassion towards others, strength through hard times, generosity and leadership. Her keen intellect, sharp wit and insistence on speaking her mind never left her and were endearing traits for all that knew her. Mary was a true “survivor” and overcame the many challenges life brought her way including two strokes and one significant illness late in life. Despite her resilience and natural orneriness, she concluded her journey peacefully having left no stone unturned. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, as well as her brothers Lloyd and Eugene and sister Katherine. She will be so dearly missed by all that knew her. May she rest in peace. Funeral service 10 a.m. Friday, August 18, 2017 with visitation one hour prior both at Resthaven Mortuary.
