Helen was born on January 31, 1934 in Wagoner County, Oklahoma the third of nine children born to Oren David and Augusta Ellen (Brown) Moreland. She spent her childhood around the Broken Arrow and Wagoner, Oklahoma areas. At the age of 13, she moved with her family to Dewey, Oklahoma where she finished her education at Copan High School and began her employment with Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
She married her best friend and lifetime companion, Leon P. Capps on January 18, 1953.
In June of 1956, they moved with their one year old daughter, Brenda Gail, to Wichita, Kansas, and it was there that three sons, Curtis Leon, Miles Aaron and Mark Arlen, were added to the family. Helen's motto was "God 1st, then family, then job". She was most happy when she was with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Curtis Capps; two sisters: Lorene Owen and Cherry Webb; and four brothers: Vernon, Oren David Jr., Kenneth and Don Moreland.
Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Leon Capps; their children, Miles and wife, LeAnn Capps, Mark Capps, all of the Wichita area, Brenda McBroom, of El Paso, Texas; eight grandchildren, Courtney McBroom, Emily McBroom and partner, Chris Felder, Amber and husband, Geff Garcia, Adam and wife, Kristi Capps, Morgan Capps, Kristin and husband, Wayne Gleason, Hunter Kamphaus; five great grandchildren, Grace McBroom, Nevaeh Garcia, Noah Garcia, Aubrie Gleason, Jaxton Gleason; and sisters, Lois Hersh Moon and Patsy Garretson.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita. Funeral service will be 2:00pm, Thursday, May 18, at Central Community Church, 6100 West Maple Street, Wichita. A graveside service will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, Garden of Christus, Wichita.
