Grace Edna Cornett passed away Friday, May 5th, 2023 at the age of 96. She was born on April 10th, 1927 in Sulphur Springs, AR to Jerry and Pearl Gobel. As one of eight children, she grew up on a farm. Grace moved to Wichita, KS in 1943 to be near her sisters and opportunity. At the age of 16 she worked as a shirtmaker, honing her skills to become a respected master tailor. She retired at the age of 78 and was awarded Tailor of the Year for Men’s Warehouse in 1993.
Grace lived her life for Jesus Christ. She was a Sunday school teacher and Bible study leader at Friendship Baptist Church. She was also very active in her grandchildren’s lives taking them on trips to Joyland, Barnacle Bill’s Fantasea, and to church when they were children. She spent her remaining years serving the Lord and spending time with friends and family, playing dominos with Gary and Connie, while residending at Reeds Cove Health and Rehabilitation.
The visitation will be Tuesday, May 9th 2023 from 6-8pm at Hillside Funeral Home West, 2929 W 13th St N, Wichita, KS 67203 with a graveside service at Hillcrest Cemetery, 10102 E 95th St S, Derby, KS 67037 on Wednesday, May 10th, 2023 at 10am.
Grace is preceded in death by her parents Jerry and Pearl; sisters Goldie Lewis, Flossie Stroud, Ethel Sword, and Elizabeth Gobel; brothers Albert Gobel and John Gobel. She is survived by her son, John (Karen) Bertelsen of Wichita, KS; brother, Don Gobel of Andover, KS; grandchildren: Christi Bertelsen of Brooklyn, NY, Anthony (Jennifer) Bertelsen of Wichita, KS, and Marcus (Olinda) Bertelsen of Riverview, FL; great-grandchildren: Kellon Bertelsen, Makayah Bertelsen, and Skye Bertelsen; and several nieces and nephews.
